The luxuriously appointed fitness area is equipped with a range of up-to-date cardio-vascular machines, which are designed to provide variable rate exercise adjustable in endurance to suit the individual’s current fitness level.

You can choose between walking, running, stepping, cycling (upright and recumbent) or rowing. Once you’ve warmed up and stretched your muscles, you can use a full selection of modern Precor, Life Fitness and Star Trac machines to either tone or build all the muscle groups you choose. An interesting feature of the fitness area is the “pulse circuit” system, which uses a series of traffic lights to guide you through a complete workout at the right pace. A separate free weights room is provided, where members who prefer more traditional exercises may work out.

Before any new member or visitor is allowed to use the fitness suite an assessment with Mike Smith, our chief instructor, or one of our other qualified staff is essential, partly to guard against over exertion and partly to help the individual to set any special objectives, such as weight loss, body toning or performance.

At the Tollgate, exercise is seen as just one part of a healthy living programme, which the instructors are happy to introduce to members who wish to improve their lifestyle. Advice on diet, relaxation and other issues affecting your life is freely available.

We also participate in a GP Exercise Referral scheme, in association with The Wright Foundation.
